Ducray Lenoir, in collaboration with Elekta, an innovative company in the field of equipment and software for cancer treatment, organized an event to highlight how new technologies can improve, prolong and save the lives of cancer patients. The event took place in front of an audience of guests from the public and private health sector.
Yunus Munga, Business Unit Manager of Elekta Africa, highlighted the different facets of this project in Mauritius: constraints, innovations, partnership opportunities among others.
The health sector in constant demand for innovation in Mauritius
In recent years, there has been a lot of investment in the health sector in Mauritius, however, it is still not enough. The small island is short of resources in terms of cancer treatment for example, and that is why the two organizing companies, Ducray Lenoir and Elekta wanted to organize this event.
The presentation aimed at identifying new opportunities that will give access to a better quality of life to Mauritians, with the help of more advanced medical and scientific solutions. Yunus Munga, highlighted the constraints African countries face in terms of awareness or treatment options.
He pointed out that “Elekta’s challenge is the implementation of a National Cancer Program. The company aims to educate the population about cancer, encourage early detection and teach lifestyle habits to prevent this disease. It also offers hi-tech equipment available for the relief of cancer patients.

In order to train its staff in the many different types of high-precision equipment, Elekta frequently sends its employees abroad to learn more about the various tools at their disposal and to receive further training. In line with this, Elekta recently opened its new training centre in Cape Town, South Africa. The Elekta Training Centre Cape Town was established through a collaboration between Elekta, Tygerberg Hospital Cape Town and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). This centre has been set up to train physicists, radiotherapists and radiographers, among others.
